“The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.”
– Peter F. Drucker

“You gotta have fun. Regardless of how you look at it, we’re playing
a game. It’s a business, it’s our job, but I don’t think you can do
well unless you’re having fun.”
– Derek Jeter
==================================================================

Every so often (or more often than you might like) your business
is going to go through a period where no matter what you do with
your marketing, it seems as though nothing works. No leads, no calls,
no conversions and thus, no customers. As we’ve learned from the
business sage Peter Drucker, your purpose in business is to create
a customer.

If your marketing isn’t doing that today (creating a customer, that
is), and nothing we’ve talked about so far is working for you, perhaps
it’s time we take a step back and consider the element of PLAY in
marketing.

What do I mean by “play”? Well, simply put, one of the best reasons
for being in business as an entrepreneur is that if something’s not
working, you can play with it, transform it, tweak it and otherwise
make it work to your liking.

Yesterday we talked about being a fast-follower and adapting your
competitors’ ideas to make them better, faster, more effective
and use them for your own marketing. Your job now is to look at
your marketing, the elements that are working and those that are
not, and improve, transform, reform, upgrade, blow up or othwise
tear them apart to make it all work better!

***** ACTION SUMMARY *****

1. Be the customer. Take an outside in view (call anonymously,
drive by with your spouse, re-read your brochure) and look back
through the ‘window’ into your business as if you are a young
child trying to figure out how the world works. Can you figure
out how to better tell your story to that child?

2. Take one of the elements of your marketing that you want to
improve and make it into a game. Establish a reward and work
toward the daily goal. Marketing SHOULD BE FUN! Make it so!

Well, that’s all for now. Be on the lookout for next lesson
tomorrow.
