As always, you can catch up on any back issues here:

“In the old days, networking was about who you knew. In the
Internet arena, it’s about who knows you.”
– Peter Weddle (Talent Recruiter)
==================================================================
Networking is about three things. Reaching out in a useful manor,
following up in a timely fashion and differentiating your business
in a meaningful way that people remember. If you can get those
three things down, you’ve got networking mastered.
Networking should be an integral part of any entrepreneur’s DIY
marketing plan. After all, if it’s all you, and you’re all you’ve
got, then networking will get you out there!
With all else being equal, people buy from who they like, know and
trust. Let’s look at each of those:
Like – Are you helpful, genuine and generally looking out for your
fellow wo/man? If not, it makes it hard to like you. I’m a huge
fan of ‘making your marketing useful’ so that you ALWAYS provide
more in use value than you take. Networking is no different. Think
about how you can be useful.
Know – Knowing can take multiple forms. Simply seeing your name in
the paper can give someone ‘knowledge’ of you. So networking can
be there to put a name to a face. The bottom line – surround your
networking activity with other marketing elements, like the one’s
we’ve already discussed to make a real impact.
Trust – Trust is earned. In fact, there’s a large body of scientific
work around what makes people trust other people. Trust is built
over time across a series of interactions, which makes the
follow-up element of networking such an imperative.
Well, let’s not complicated this any more than need be. On to the
networking action items. Some of the most successful networkers
started out by putting a regiment like this in place before
it become second-nature to them. They’re all thriving
entrepreneurs, of course!
***** ACTION SUMMARY *****
1. Download the networking mind map below and work though it with
your own networking goals in mind.
2. Start making your networking plan for next week. Who will you
contact, why will you contact them and what can you do for them?
3. If you’ve not done proper follow-ups for all of the people that
you’ve met this month, carve out some time this weekend to work through
that.
