“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the
right direction.”
– John C. Crosby (Well-regarded politician from Massachusetts)
==================================================================
As I’m sure you’ve figured out by this point, do-it-yourself
marketing doesn’t mean, nor should it mean that you have to do it
“all by yourself.” In fact, the most successful people in any field
of study have mentors, mastermind groups, coaches, confidants and
other people that they rely on to push them, inspire them, hold
them accountable and generally help them to be a better person, or,
in this case, a better marketer.
The original Mentor is a character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey.
When Odysseus, King of Ithaca went to fight in the Trojan War,
he entrusted the care of his kingdom to Mentor. Mentor served as
the teacher and overseer of Odysseuss’ son, Telemachus.
** Finding a Mentor:
Mentors are all around you, and your next mentor is likely right
under your nose. Think of an individual who you admire and
respect. Is there someone who’s insight and wisdom you appreciate?
Approach that individual and ask if they would consider being your
mentor. Let them know the following:
1. Why you selected them
2. What you hope to learn from them
3. The time commitment involved
4. How you envision the relationship working
5. Explain what you will both contribute to the relationship
If you prefer a marketing mentor from a formal organization, you
can contact the SCORE Association (Service Corps of Retired
Executives) for a free business counselor.
** Be a Mentor:
If someone asks you to be their mentor, consider it an opportunity
to learn and grow by teaching. You don’t need any special skills
to be a mentor. You just need an ability to listen, and offer
friendship, guidance and encouragement to your colleague. You’ll
be amazed how much you’ll get out of the experience.
***** ACTION SUMMARY *****
1. Make of list of possible mentors and approach the one that you want
to work with the most, or contact SCORE to connect with someone in
their pool of mentors.
2. Be open to being a mentor for someone else in your field. If you’ve
not been approached, it’s only a matter of time!
