e-Course Day 25 Email

SUBJECT: [DIY Marketing] Marketing in Seven Slides or Less

When’s the last time you sat through a boring
business meeting, or worse yet, when’s the last time your bored
a prospect or local business group with your presentation?
Marketing in seven slides is all about crafting your pitch &
presentation to make an impact in any setting.

Oh, and if you just signed up, you can see the course info we’ve
already covered right here:

“Mind you, that’s not to say presentation is everything. At the
end of the day, it really doesn’t matter how nice your coffee
machine is. What counts is the quality of the service that you
offer.”

– Peter Bolton

No matter what, as an entrepreneur, at some point you’re going to
be presenting, pitching, doing a dog and pony show or otherwise
having to convey your message and value proposition quickly and
likely in the form of a presentation. Drawing on my years as a
professional speaker and a recent book called “The Seven Slide
Solution”, I want to share a few ideas on how to give your
message a bit more impact.

In the Seven Slide Solution, Paul Kelly lays out a clear methodology
for delivering a complete message in seven slides. Granted, if you
were to do a presentation about the complete history of marketing
or to explain the state of the economy, you might need more than
seven slides. However, the story that we’re telling here is your
own. This is the seven slide story of your business. Here’s how to
tell it.

Slide 1: Engagement – State the core conflict and state your
premise

Slide 2: Backstory – How did you get here, what’s your data and
be sure to know when to quit…decide how much ‘backstory’ is enough

Slide 3: Building Tension – Build up the problem (that your business
solves) and then drill down to the issues

Slide 4: Bring It To A Boil – Present your killer statistic, there’s
no alternative but yours, state the consequences of no action

Slide 5: Offer Choices – Present a fork in the road, a multiple
choice answer or something that leads down the path to you

Slide 6: Provide Resolution – Resolve the core conflict from
Slide 1, stay focused on the what and let the audience ask the
how

Slide 7: Setup The Sequel – This is the time to give the
audience a chance for questions, fill in the gaps and setup
for your telling additional stories on how you can add value

While the model here, just seven slides, seems quite simple,
it’s actually quite challenging to mold a message into such
a succinct format. I’m working through it now and it’s a fun
challenge! I encourage you to take the same challenge and
refine you message down to just seven slides!

***** ACTION SUMMARY *****

1. Using the seven slide framework, take some time this weekend or
in the next few days to rough out a storyboard for your seven
slide version of your business story.

2. Share your seven slide story with a colleague. Get their
feedback.
