“It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least
the equivalent of what he takes out of it.”
– Albert Einstein

When I hold marketing seminars in my home town of Green Bay, WI,
I always try to hold them at the same college that I graduated from
not just because I like the place, but because they have a state-of
-the-art conference facility that’s highly regarded in the area. One
of the most interesting things is that all of the rooms are ‘donated
by’ or ‘named for’ someone who contributed to the building. Namely,
they ‘gave back’ for the benefits that they’ve received from doing
business in the community.

What caused these names to stand out last time was one of the members
of a group that I’m involved with was volunteering her time, as was I
in this very building upstairs from a room ‘donated’ by her company. I
got to thinking that the wonderful company that she worked for had the
foresight and ethical code to continue to encourage its employees to
engage in the community, volunteer for worthy causes and generally
try to leave the community a better place than it was just the day
before.

Great companies have always done this. They have always gotten involved
in the communities that they serve to reap benefits way beyond their
profits and market share. There’s something about the very fabric of
communities that almost demands that entrepreneurs get involved at
every level.

The question is, how are you involved? Did you know that ‘volunteering’
and ‘getting involved’ in local charities, serving on scholarship boards,
heading up a cause or steering committee and speaking and sharing your
wisdom with local youth and service groups can pay huge dividends in
growing your business? If not, now’s a great time to start!

I know, you’re all busy, but this is some of the most important work
that you’ll ever do. More to the point, you’ll be networking with
kind, thoughtful, ethical and caring people who can clearly see the
quality of your character and will often choose to do business with you
over someone who’s ‘not as involved’ as you.

***** ACTION SUMMARY *****

1. Start doing favors. If you’re working at less than full capacity,
now’s a great time to help another company, a non-profit, a local
college or anyone who can use your expertise. I made a personal
pledge this year to help “about 1 person a week” using a skill,
talent or access that I have. By the end of the year, I’ll have at
least 50 people that I will have helped who will say great things about
my company. Come December, will people say such nice things about you?

2. If you’d rather go the route of an organized charity, find one, or a
few in your area that you want to work with. Call them up or connect with
their leadership on LinkedIn. Take that person out for coffee and ask
how you can help with the skills you have. You’ll be amazed at the
response you get and the places that you’ll go with that simple
gesture.

3. Always remember the marketing angle on this. After you’ve helped the
30 or so people (we’ve got 30 weeks left in the year) you’re going to help,
when someone asks for professional project references, you’ve got a raft
of evangelists on your side!
